معرفی
Roberto Musmanno is a Full Professor of Operations Research and Logistics at the Department of Mechanical, Energetic and Management Engineering (DIMEG) of the University of Calabria (Unical), Italy. He currently teaches "Logistics" and "Operations Research" in the Management Engineering Degree program. Since January 13, 2014, he has served as the Rector's delegate for Research and Technology transfer at the University of Calabria.
His academic journey includes serving as Assistant Professor of Operations Research at Unical from July 1995 to October 1998, and as Associate Professor of Operations Research at the University of Lecce from November 1998 to October 2001. He also held prestigious positions as a Post-doctoral Research Associate at Stanford University's Operations Research Department (June-August 1992) and as a Visiting Scientist at MIT's Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (March-April 1993, May 1994).
Professor Musmanno's research focuses on complex decision-making problems under uncertainty. His work spans logistics optimization, network design, and decision support systems for critical applications. He has made significant contributions to vehicle routing, supply chain management, and sustainable transportation systems. His research integrates mathematical programming with artificial intelligence techniques to develop hybrid optimization approaches, addressing problems in static and dynamic environments including mathematical programming, combinatorial optimization, stochastic programming, robust optimization, and bilevel programming.
His publication portfolio demonstrates a strong trend toward solving real-world logistics and transportation challenges with increasing focus on sustainability, uncertainty handling, and large-scale optimization. Recent works address urban logistics, green tourism, electric vehicle routing, and resilient supply chains, reflecting his commitment to applying operations research to contemporary societal challenges across diverse application areas including sustainable supply chain systems, vehicle and drone routing, green transportation with electric vehicles, energy infrastructure optimization, healthcare process optimization, financial risk management, and smart grid energy pricing.
Among his recognitions, Professor Musmanno received two annual research scholarships from the Italian National Research Council. His institutional roles include:
- Scientific coordinator of TESEO (Laboratory of Simulation and Optimization Technologies)
- Member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Center of Excellence for High Performance Computing
- Project evaluator for the Italian Minister of University and Research
- Member of the Ph.D. committee in Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Calabria
- Former chairman of the Council for the Degree in Management Engineering at Unical (2002-2011)
Professor Musmanno has coordinated numerous Italian and European research and development projects, as well as joint research activities with local institutions. He has published over 50 papers in international journals and co-authored six books, two with international relevance. His work has established significant collaborations with prestigious international research centers and companies including Amazon.
He leads the TESEO Laboratory of Simulation and Optimization Technologies at the University of Calabria, which focuses on developing advanced mathematical models and efficient solution algorithms. The laboratory maintains active national and international collaborations with research centers and companies of international prestige, applying methodological innovations to diverse sectors including logistics, transportation, energy systems, healthcare, and financial risk management.
