Roberto Maiolino is Professor of Experimental Astrophysics at the Cavendish Laboratory (University of Cambridge Department of Physics) and Honorary Professor at University College London. He holds the Royal Society Research Professor title, elected to the Royal Society in 2022 and knighted by Italy in 2018. His career includes postdoctoral roles at the Max Planck Institute and senior positions at Italian observatories before joining Cambridge in 2012.
Education: MSc and PhD in Physics/Astronomy from the University of Florence (1992, 1996). Postdoctoral work at the Steward Observatory, University of Arizona.
Research focuses on extragalactic astronomy, including galaxy formation/evolution, black hole symbiosis, and early Universe phenomena. Key projects lead: NIRSpec (James Webb Space Telescope), MOONS (VLT), and ANDES (ELT). Instrumental in JADES survey and SAPPHIRES projects.
Scientific achievements include discoveries of obscured AGN populations, nitrogen-enhanced galaxies, and early Universe black holes. Recognized through prestigious awards including the Royal Society Fellowship and Italian knighthood.
