Professor Roberto La Ragione is the Interim Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey, where he also serves as Professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology and Head of the School of Biosciences. His academic career began with a BSc (Hons), MSc, and PhD in veterinary microbiology from the Royal Veterinary College and the Veterinary Laboratories Agency.
His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, and One Health approaches to combat zoonotic diseases. He actively supervises 6 PhD students and has a record of over 25 successful supervisees. Professor La Ragione teaches on veterinary biosciences and medicine programs, emphasizing practical applications of microbiology and pathology.
Key contributions include developing rapid diagnostic tools (e.g., LAMP-based assays) and genomic approaches to combat pathogens like Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Campylobacter. His work aligns with global health initiatives, including reducing antimicrobial resistance through vaccines and alternative therapies.
