Dr. Roberto J. Botelho is a Professor and Undergraduate Program Director for Cellular and Molecular Biology in the Department of Chemistry and Biology at Toronto Metropolitan University. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Organelle Function and Adaptation (2014-2019, 2019-2024) and serves as Graduate Supervisor for the Molecular Science Graduate Program.
His educational background includes:
- B.Sc. from York University
- PhD from University of Toronto
- Post-doctoral fellowships at University of California San Diego and Cornell University
Dr. Botelho's research investigates molecular mechanisms of organelle function in innate immunity, focusing on phagocytosis, lysosome adaptation during infection, and phosphoinositide lipid signaling. His lab employs cell lines, mouse models, advanced imaging, and genetic tools to study how organelles like phagosomes and lysosomes mature and respond to stress, with implications for immune responses and cancer biology.
His major awards include:
- Canada Research Chair in Organelle Function and Adaptation (2014-2019, 2019-2024)
- Dean's Service Award (2021)
- Early Researcher Award (2014-2019)
- Dean's Teaching Award (2016)
As an educator, Dr. Botelho teaches Cell Biology II, Immunology, and Molecular Machines of the Cell while directing undergraduate curriculum development. He mentors graduate students through the Molecular Science program and serves on key departmental committees including the Symposium Committee and Biomedical Sciences Curriculum Committee.
The Botelho Lab (http://botelholab.com/) maintains an active research program studying organelle dynamics in immune cells, utilizing advanced microscopy and biochemical approaches. The lab is open to collaborations and new research directions exploring membrane trafficking and cellular adaptation mechanisms.
