Roberto Herrera is an Associate Professor in the School of Language, Education, and Culture at Gallaudet University, specializing in World Languages and Cultures. He joined Gallaudet in 2007 and holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in Teaching English and Spanish as a Second Language from Universidad de las Américas Puebla (Mexico), and a BA in English from Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico).
His teaching focuses on Spanish as a Second Language, Linguistics, and courses on Latin American and Spanish culture, history, and politics. He is particularly dedicated to refining pedagogical methods for Deaf students learning languages, leveraging his experience in acquiring ASL and teaching with interpreters during his early years at Gallaudet. His research emphasizes adapting language instruction to meet the unique needs of Deaf learners, capitalizing on Gallaudet's unique environment as a leader in Deaf education.
Currently, he teaches courses such as SPA-111 Basic Spanish I, WLC-314 Topics in Language Diversity, and WLC-380 The Latino Presence in the United States. His work highlights the intersection of linguistics, cultural studies, and inclusive education, advocating for effective language acquisition strategies tailored to diverse student populations.
