Roberto Diaz is a Professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California (USC). He holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard University (1991), an M.A. from Harvard (1984), and a B.S. in Russian from Georgetown University (1982). His research focuses on Latin American literary and cultural history with emphasis on transatlantic relations, multilingualism, and opera's role in cultural production. He has held administrative roles including Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (2010-2011) and Co-Director of the Madrid Summer Program.

Research interests include opera's cultural impact in Latin America, Borges' prose, and transatlantic literary exchanges. Recent presentations include invited lectures at Universidad de Buenos Aires (2010), University of Liverpool (2010), and University of London (2008). His current book project examines opera in Latin America's cultural landscape.
Notable awards include the USC Provost’s Grant (2008-2009) for research in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and other regions, plus a Rockefeller Foundation residency (2008). Active in professional service, he served on the MLA Executive Committees for Cuban Cultural Production (2011) and 20th-Century Latin American Literature (2006-2011).
