Roberto Ballarini is the Thomas and Laura Hsu Professor and Department Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Houston, part of the Cullen College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and has held academic roles at institutions including the University of Minnesota and Case Western Reserve University. His research focuses on fracture mechanics, biomechanics, nanomechanics, and infrastructure safety, with notable contributions to materials science and structural analysis. He leads a research group exploring biomimetic materials, glaciology modeling, and computational mechanics.
Ballarini’s professional honors include Fellowships from the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), as well as Distinguished Membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). His work spans interdisciplinary projects, such as analyzing the I-35W Bridge collapse and developing models for collagen fibrils. He maintains active collaborations in both academic and industrial contexts, emphasizing translational research.
