Robert Young is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences within the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus. His office is located in SCI 214 and he can be reached at 250.807.9523 or robert.young@ubc.ca.
Dr. Young specializes in the study of past environments and geological processes, with particular expertise in:
- Glacial and fluvial processes
- Landforms and landscapes
- Quaternary environments
- Sedimentology and stratigraphy
- Geomorphology
His research focuses on reconstructing past events and environments using physical and biological evidence, with particular interest in Pleistocene-era landscapes. He challenges the conventional geological axiom that "The Present is the Key to the Past," noting evidence that some past environments may have no present-day analogues.
Dr. Young teaches several courses including EESC/GEO 222 Geomorphology, EESC/GEOG 356 Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, EESC 431 Quaternary Glacial Environments, and GEOG 317 Environments of BC.
His educational background includes:
- PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Calgary
- MSc in Physical Geography from the University of Alberta
- BSc in Physical Geography from the University of Alberta
