Robert Whalen is a Professor in the Department of English at Northern Michigan University, specializing in early modern literature and digital humanities. He holds a B.A. from York University (1993), an M.A. (1995), and a Ph.D. (1999) from the University of Toronto. His research spans metaphysical poetry, textual scholarship, and digital editing, with a focus on George Herbert, John Donne, and early modern religious poetry.
Whalen co-edits the George Herbert: Complete Works (Oxford University Press, 2025) and its Complete Works Digital Archive, a database supported by National Endowment for the Humanities grants and internal NMU funding. His work bridges manuscript studies and digital tools like the Versioning Machine v5.0, emphasizing TEI-XML encoding for accessibility and longevity.
