Robert W. Sanders is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Temple University’s College of Science and Technology, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Advancement. He leads the Sanders Lab, focusing on microbial ecology, particularly mixotrophic protists in marine and freshwater environments. His research spans polar regions, including multiple Antarctic expeditions supported by the National Science Foundation.
Education:
- Ph.D., University of Georgia, 1988
- M.S., University of Maine, 1982
- B.A., University of Virginia, 1979
Sanders is an ecologist whose research centers on planktonic protists, including algae and protozoa, and their trophic interactions. His lab investigates mixotrophy—the combination of photosynthesis and phagotrophy—in diverse aquatic systems. Key areas include the effects of temperature, UV radiation, nutrients, and dissolved organic matter on food web dynamics. He has led funded research in both the Arctic and Southern Oceans, with a long-standing interest in the physiology and ecological significance of mixotrophic organisms. His work also extends to symbiotic relationships, nutrient cycling, and the impacts of environmental stressors on aquatic ecosystems.
His recent publications highlight trends in mixotrophy, microbial diversity in polar regions, nutrient limitation effects, and physiological responses to environmental change. These studies employ molecular techniques, field experiments, and ecological modeling to understand microbial roles in aquatic systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow, Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography
Sanders has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students, many of whom have completed honors theses, Ph.D.s, and M.S. degrees under his supervision. He has served on advisory committees for additional students across disciplines. His lab has received continuous funding from agencies like the NSF, supporting both fieldwork and laboratory research. He has held leadership roles including Chair of the Biology Department and is transitioning to Associate Dean.
He is actively involved in professional service, including editorial roles for journals such as Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, and leadership in societies like the International Society of Protistologists, where he served as President. His lab maintains strong collaborative networks, particularly in polar research, and engages in public outreach through expedition blogs and educational initiatives.
