Robert W. Park is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on Arctic archaeology, particularly the cultures of the Far North (Canadian Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Greenland, Alaska) and Northeastern North America. He earned his BA (1981), MA (1984), and PhD (1989) from the University of Toronto, McMaster University, and the University of Alberta, respectively. Park has conducted extensive fieldwork across Arctic Canada.
His research interests include the Dorset-Thule transition, Arctic exploration history (Franklin Expedition), chert provenance, GIS modeling, and the archaeology of childhood. Recent publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining DNA analysis, oral history, and geophysics to study Arctic migrations and Franklin-related sites. Collaborative work with Douglas R. Stenton and others dominates his output.
Key trends in his work emphasize technological adaptation, cultural continuity, and the integration of scientific methods (DNA, GIS) with traditional archaeological fieldwork. His courses cover prehistoric peoples, Arctic archaeology, and hunter-gatherer studies.
