Robert Shorten is a Professor of Cyber-physical Systems at the Dyson School of Engineering Design, Imperial College London, and Head of Department. He is affiliated with University College Dublin and co-founded the Hamilton Institute at Maynooth University. His research focuses on Smart Mobility, Control Theory, Hybrid Systems, Networking, Linear Algebra, Sharing Economy, and Distributed Ledgers. He led IBM Research's Control and Optimization Team and held professorships at UCD.
Education and Professional Background: Shorten has held roles at IBM Research (Senior Research Manager) and academic appointments at multiple institutions. He co-authored books on AIMD dynamics, electric vehicle networks, and sharing economy analytics. His work integrates control theory with societal challenges like climate change and urban safety.
Research Interests: His work spans cyber-physical systems, smart cities, epidemic mitigation strategies (e.g., via Kemeny constant sampling), and tyre emissions reduction. He collaborates with automotive firms and institutions like the Tyre Collective to address particulate pollution. Key projects include herd route safety systems and feedback control frameworks for urban traffic.
Funding and Recognition: Supported by Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, and the European Commission. His work appears in venues like Nature Physics and Scientific American. Recent focus areas include EV charging optimization, distributed ledger security, and fair machine learning in energy markets.
Labs and Teams: Leads the Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance (interim) and collaborates on projects like Spatial Positioning Tokens (SPTokens) for smart mobility. His interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, environmental science, and public policy.
