Robert Shedinger is a Professor of Religion at Luther College, where he has taught since 2000. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Temple University (2000), an M.Div. from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (1994), and a B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology from Temple University (1982). His research focuses on redefining the concept of religion, particularly challenging its modern Western framing, and exploring Christian-Muslim relations.

Shedinger’s research interests span the Syriac versional tradition of the New Testament, theoretical approaches to religion, and contemporary Christian-Muslim relations. His publications include Was Jesus a Muslim? (2009) and Radically Open (2012). He critiques the modern construct of “religion” as a Western invention and advocates for transcending rigid religious identities.
His teaching covers biblical studies, Islamic studies, and science and religion. Notable courses include Introduction to Biblical Studies and Islam and Contemporary Movements.
Awards include the American Bible Society Award for Excellence in Biblical Studies (1994).
