Robert Schoen is the inaugural Hoffman Professor of Family Sociology and Demography at The Pennsylvania State University. He earned his PhD in Demography from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972 and has held academic positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Johns Hopkins University, and Penn State.
His research focuses on mortality, fertility, aging, and ethnic stratification, with particular emphasis on union/family formation and dissolution and formal demography. Schoen has developed significant theoretical frameworks in mathematical demography and population modeling.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on mathematical approaches to demographic phenomena, including fertility quantum and tempo, hyperstable population models, and intrinsic linkage methods. His work bridges theoretical demography with practical applications for understanding population dynamics.
Schoen is the author of over 100 articles and chapters, as well as two influential books: Modeling Multigroup Populations (1988) and Dynamic Population Models (2006), which have shaped contemporary demographic methodology.
He maintains an active research agenda as evidenced by his 2024 publication on fertility quantum and tempo, demonstrating his continued contribution to demographic science despite his lengthy career.
