Robert Schoelkopf is the Sterling Professor of Applied Physics and Physics at Yale University and Director of the Yale Quantum Institute. He holds dual appointments in the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on quantum computing and superconducting devices, pioneering the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED). He earned his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and joined Yale's faculty in 1998. His work includes developing quantum bits (qubits), quantum error correction, and high-sensitivity electrometers. Key awards include the 2024 Comstock Prize in Physics and election to the National Academy of Sciences.
Research interests emphasize quantum transport, single-electron devices, and superconducting quantum dots. Projects involve quantum-limited amplifiers, sub-millimeter radiation detectors, and fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures. His lab employs advanced cryogenics and microwave techniques, with facilities including dilution refrigerators and cleanroom lithography.
