Robert Reed is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associate Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering. His research focuses on understanding radiation effects in microelectronics, particularly Single Event Effects (SEEs), to improve radiation-hardened technologies for space and high-reliability applications. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University and East Tennessee State University, respectively. His work spans semiconductor devices, photonics, and materials science, with applications in space instrumentation and nuclear environments.
Key research areas include radiation-induced degradation in power devices (e.g., SiC Schottky diodes), laser-induced transient effects in FinFETs, and space radiation environment modeling. He has contributed to the development of the SIRE2 toolkit for radiation vulnerability assessment and advanced climatology models. Reed's expertise also extends to photonics in extreme environments and the reliability of 3D-integrated circuits under ionizing radiation.
His recent articles emphasize space-based electronics reliability, including lunar gravitational wave detectors and radiation-hardened lasers. Collaborations include the RadFxSat-2 mission to study FinFET microelectronics in orbit. He actively engages with the academic and aerospace communities through publications in top journals and conferences on radiation effects and reliability engineering.
