Robert Prettner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Network Institute. His research focuses on social dynamics in communication between professionals, policymakers, and citizens, particularly in healthcare and public health settings. He employs methods like conversation analysis, framing analysis, and surveys to study how communicative behaviors influence collaboration or controversy, such as addressing misinformation in medical contexts and analyzing governmental messaging during the COVID-19 pandemic. His doctoral work, Shots at Stake, examined 75 healthcare conversations about childhood vaccinations, leading to an accredited communication training for professionals. He teaches courses including Introduction to Communication Studies, Applied Statistics, and Social Media Analytics.
His research interests include vaccine hesitancy, healthcare professional-patient communication, and policy implications of scientific communication. Recent work explores vaccination decision-making processes, framing of expertise during crises, and interactional dynamics in healthcare consultations. He collaborates on projects like the Shots at Stake initiative funded by VWS-RIVM, focusing on improving communication strategies for vaccination advocacy.
Dr. Prettner’s articles highlight themes such as vaccine hesitancy, pandemic communication, and discourse analysis in healthcare settings. His work bridges theoretical communication studies with practical applications in policy and training, aiming to enhance synergetic action between stakeholders with competing interests.
