معرفی
Dr. Robert Peoples is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University's College of Health Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Purdue University (1989) and has extensive experience at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including roles as a Senior Staff Fellow and Chief of the Unit of Cellular Neuropharmacology. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of alcohol and CNS depressants on NMDA receptors, ion channel gating, and neurotoxic effects of amyloid-β in Alzheimer's disease. He has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and secured NIH grants totaling over $2.8 million.
- Education: B.S. (Purdue University, 1983), Ph.D. (Pharmacology, Purdue, 1989)
- Professional Societies: Research Society on Alcoholism, Society for Neuroscience
Research Interests: Dr. Peoples investigates alcohol's effects on NMDA receptor structure/function, ion channel modulation, and molecular sites of action. His work also explores neurotoxic mechanisms of β-amyloid and therapeutic interventions for excitotoxicity. Key contributions include identifying alcohol-sensitive domains in NMDA receptors and elucidating Gβγ-mediated ethanol effects on ligand-gated channels.
Grants & Awards: NIH R01 grants (2004-2010), Procter & Gamble Fellowship, and over $1.3 million in active funding. His lab collaborates with institutions like the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
Advising: Mentor to over 15 Ph.D. students and postbaccalaureates, including thesis directors for Yulin Zhao, Andrew Karls, and others. Leads the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center (INRC) and contributes to curriculum development in biomedical sciences, pre-med/dental programs, and neuroscience graduate training.
Labs/Teams: Active member of Marquette's Integrated Neuroscience Research Center (INRC), focusing on translational research in neuropharmacology and alcohol-related disorders.
