Robert Oliver is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment. His research focuses on urban-historical geographies, particularly the political and spatial impacts of mega-event bidding (e.g., Olympics), waterfront development, and smart city initiatives. He joined Virginia Tech in 2007 after completing his Ph.D. at Queen’s University, Canada.

His work examines how Olympic bids shape urban policy and planning, challenging traditional notions of 'failure' in bid outcomes. Recent projects explore quantification's role in reshaping urban life through smart city technologies. He has received over a dozen teaching awards, including the 2021 Outstanding Teaching Award from CNRE and multiple Favorite Faculty recognitions. His scholarship includes a monograph on failed Olympic bids and contributions to edited volumes on mega-events and disaster governance.
