Robert McLeman is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU), Faculty of Science. His research focuses on environmental migration, climate change adaptation, and citizen engagement in environmental science. He leads the RinkWatch project, which uses citizen science to study climate impacts on winter recreation. McLeman teaches courses on environmental policy and migration studies, and his work bridges academia with practical applications in climate governance.
His research interests include the intersections of climate change, migration, and policy, with a focus on drought impacts, displacement frameworks, and interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges. Key projects include historical drought analysis in Ireland and North America, migration governance in polycrisis scenarios, and vulnerability assessments in climate-vulnerable regions.
Mcleman’s publications emphasize the human dimensions of climate change, including migration drivers, adaptation strategies, and policy recommendations. He collaborates on initiatives like the IPCC reporting analysis and frameworks for understanding complex migration flows. His work often highlights the need for adaptive planning and institutional collaboration to address climate displacement challenges.
He advises students in migration studies and climate adaptation, and his research has been featured in media discussions on climate migration. McLeman’s office is located in Arts 3C10C at WLU, and he speaks English and French.
