Dr Robert Matthews is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Education within the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics at the University of Adelaide. He joined the School in 2003 and teaches across both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, preparing beginning teachers for classroom practice and supervising Masters dissertations.
Robert's research focuses on the application of analytical psychology in educational transformation, exploring archetypal approaches to learning through the frameworks developed by Carl Jung, Mari-Louise von Franz and Wolfgang Pauli. His work examines creativity as transformative praxis involving conscious and unconscious dynamics, the role of spiritual life in educators' development, and the psychology of paradigm shifts among artists and scientists. He investigates how teachers maintain healthy complex personality structures when facing challenging classroom experiences and studies lifelong learning as a pathway for educator personality development.
Before entering academia, Robert worked as a post-doctoral research physicist at Flinders University conducting theoretical calculations of electron scattering experiments. His transition to education led him to develop curriculum for the ASMS and teach secondary physics and mathematics. Concurrently, he trained as a Jungian analyst in Switzerland, creating a unique interdisciplinary perspective that bridges physical science and psychological exploration, inspired by the work of Nobel laureate Wolfgang Pauli who collaborated with Carl Jung.
