Robert Maitta, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He holds external appointments at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center as Section Director of Transfusion Medicine, Medical Director of Apheresis, and Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology Research. His clinical training includes a residency in Clinical Pathology at Montefiore Medical Center and a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Maitta’s research focuses on translational and basic science in hematology, including α-synuclein’s role in immune cell development, platelet senescence as a diagnostic marker, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) pathophysiology. He also studies blood safety, sickle cell alloimmunization, and apheresis applications in cell therapies. Recent work explores α-synuclein’s potential in neurological neoplasm diagnostics and platelet dynamics in sepsis.
His publications emphasize TTP diagnostic algorithms, bacterial contamination prevention in blood products, and immature platelet count utility in managing microangiopathic disorders. He has authored/co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and edited two textbooks: *Immunologic Concepts in Transfusion Medicine* (2019) and *Clinical Principles of Transfusion Medicine* (2018).
Key contributions include pioneering studies on α-synuclein’s role in B/T cell maturation and advancing TTP therapeutic strategies through immature platelet analysis. He actively collaborates on apheresis protocols for CAR-T cell manufacturing and sickle cell disease management.
Education: B.S. (City College of New York), M.A. Cell Biology (City College of New York), M.S./Ph.D. Microbiology & Immunology (Albert Einstein College of Medicine), M.D. (Albert Einstein College of Medicine).
