معرفی
Robert Maass is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and an Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2024. He leads the Materials Engineering Department at the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin as Institute Director since 2020. His research focuses on plasticity mechanisms in metals, defect dynamics, and microstructural degradation, with applications in metallic components design.
- Education:
- PhD in Materials Science, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland
- Postdoc: ETH Zurich and California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
His work combines experimental and theoretical approaches, including nanoscale probing and in-situ experiments. Key research areas include bulk metallic glasses, shape-memory alloys, and liquid-metal embrittlement of steels. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and received prestigious awards like the NSF CAREER Award (2017) and Masing Memorial Medal (2019).
He teaches courses such as MSE 406 (Thermal-Mechanical Behavior of Materials) and MSE 441 (Metals Processing) at UIUC.
Grants & Collaborations: Supported by NSF, German Research Foundation (DFG), and industry partners like ArcelorMittal. Hosts postdocs via Alexander von Humboldt and Adolf Martens fellowships.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Maass Group, actively recruiting postdocs and PhD students in metals and glasses research. Recent group activities include presentations on glass relaxation at IDMRCS (2025).
