Robert M. Klein is a Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) School of Medicine and serves as the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. In this role, he oversees academic administration and student support across KUMC, acting as the chief liaison to the Kansas Board of Regents and representing the medical center in academic matters.
With a career spanning over 45 years at KUMC since 1975, Dr. Klein earned full professorship in 1987. His scholarly focus transitioned from biomedical research to medical education, where he champions active learning methodologies. He is renowned for his belief: "Tell me and I will forget, show me and I will remember, involve me and I will understand."
His research interests center on medical education innovation, including:
- Virtual microscopy applications in anatomical sciences
- Active learning and case-based teaching approaches
- Development of integrated histopathology laboratories
- Curriculum design for electronic medical education
- Transdisciplinary learning activities such as the abdominal exam theater
Dr. Klein has co-authored two books and numerous publications in medical education. His contributions have earned him multiple KUMC teaching awards and national recognition from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), and the American Association for Anatomy.
As Vice Chancellor, he leads 12 departments supporting the Schools of Health Professions, Medicine, and Nursing. His legacy includes mentoring generations of students and faculty, significantly impacting medical education at KUMC.
