Robert M. Briber is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and the Associate Dean for Research at the A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland. He holds fellowships from the American Physical Society (1995) and the Neutron Scattering Society of America (2014). His research focuses on polymer physics, biopolymers, X-ray/neutron scattering, and sustainable materials. He teaches courses ranging from introductory materials science to graduate-level polymer physics and kinetics.
Education: Ph.D. in Polymer Science from the University of Massachusetts, B.S. in Materials Science from Cornell University. Notable awards include the University of Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Teacher (2012) and two Neutron Scattering Society Exceptional Service Awards (2006, 2018).
Research emphasizes biopolymer applications (e.g., cellulose-based composites), RNA folding dynamics, and ion-conducting materials for energy storage. His labs include the Functional Macromolecular Laboratory and Polymer Characterization Laboratory. Recent work includes sustainable cellulose derivatives and high-performance hydroxide exchange membranes. He has served in leadership roles at national neutron scattering facilities and professional societies.
Teaching contributions span undergraduate courses like ENMA 150 (Materials of Civilization) and graduate core courses such as ENMA 620 (Polymer Physics). His research has led to innovations in food preservation, fire-resistant polymers, and biomedical materials. Over 150 peer-reviewed publications and active grants highlight his interdisciplinary impact in materials science and engineering.
