Robert Lucero, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, FACMI, is a Professor and the Inaugural Audrienne H. Moseley Endowed Chair in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at UCLA School of Nursing. He holds a Courtesy Faculty Appointment at the University of Florida College of Nursing. His research focuses on improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations through innovative health systems and informatics approaches, with two primary themes: enhancing care for hospitalized older adults and improving self-management of chronic conditions among marginalized groups like Hispanic, African-American, and LGBTQ+ communities. His work is funded by NIH, AHRQ, and the Florida Department of Public Health.
Dr. Lucero’s research integrates electronic health records (EHR) and data science to identify risk factors for hospital-acquired falls, leveraging natural language processing (NLP) to analyze nurse progress notes. He pioneered the Consumer-centered Participatory Design (C2PD) approach for developing health IT tools, such as apps for caregivers of dementia patients and asthma/obese children. His lab also explores AI-driven solutions for delirium prediction and pain management.
His scientific awards include FAAN (American Academy of Nursing) and FACMI (American College of Medical Informatics). Dr. Lucero’s interdisciplinary work bridges nursing, medicine, computer science, and public health, emphasizing equity and inclusion in healthcare systems.
