Dr. Robert Lee is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of History, specializing in Indigenous dispossession and US state formation in the 19th-century American West. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley, an MA from the University of Heidelberg, and a BA from Columbia University. His research combines archival work with GIS analysis, focusing on institutions like the St. Louis Superintendency and their role in US expansion. He leads the 'Land-Grab Universities' project, revealing how Indigenous land acquisitions funded land-grant colleges, which received numerous awards including the George Polk Award and University of Florida Investigative Journalism Award. His teaching includes American History to 1865 and digital humanities. He is currently on leave.
Research highlights include a book manuscript on US treaty expansion, interactive maps at landgrabu.org, and investigations into state trust lands benefiting universities. Awards span academic and journalistic recognition for his work on Indigenous land rights and digital history. He advises postgraduate students on colonization, environmental history, and digital methods.
