Dr. Robert Leaf is an Associate Professor in the Division of Coastal Sciences within the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi. His research focuses on understanding biological and ecosystem processes that determine fish population dynamics, with applications to conservation and fisheries management strategies.
His work spans multiple aspects of marine ecology including trophic dynamics using biotracer analysis, age and growth studies of commercial species, bycatch pattern analysis, and stock assessment methodologies. Recent research has incorporated advanced techniques such as computer vision for age determination and machine learning for bycatch mitigation planning.
Dr. Leaf maintains the Leaf Laboratory which conducts field and laboratory studies primarily in the Gulf of Mexico region. His research contributes to sustainable fisheries management through improved assessment techniques and understanding of ecosystem dynamics.
Current projects investigate energy densities of low trophic-level fishes, stable isotope applications in trophic ecology, and spatial growth patterns of commercially important species. His work frequently addresses management challenges in trawl fisheries and supports conservation efforts for species like Red Snapper and Atlantic tarpon.
