Robert Laughlin is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor at Stanford University's School of Humanities and Sciences, Department of Physics. He earned a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT (1979) and an A.B. in Mathematics from UC Berkeley (1972).
Research Interests: Professor Laughlin is a Nobel laureate (1998) known for his work in semiconductor physics, plasma/nuclear physics (fusion, X-ray lasers), and correlated-electron systems. His current research focuses on quantum self-organization in materials, particularly Mott insulators and high-temperature superconductivity. He proposed the concept of "orbital antiferromagnetism" as a hidden order in these systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Nobel Prize in Physics (1998)
