Robert Krasny is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). His research focuses on scientific computing, with applications in fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and molecular biophysics. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley (1983) and has been recognized with an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship (1984–1987) and an invited lecture at the 1990 International Congress of Mathematicians.

His research interests include developing numerical algorithms for particle methods, fast summation techniques (e.g., treecodes), and boundary integral methods. Key projects involve GPU-accelerated simulations of vortices, electrostatics in biomolecules, and plasma dynamics. He has contributed to software tools like the FARSIGHT Vlasov-Poisson code and the TABI-PB solver for Poisson-Boltzmann equations.
Recent articles highlight advancements in treecode algorithms for electrostatics, plasma simulations, and molecular solvation. Krasny has advised Ph.D. students such as Keith Lindsay, who received the Sumner B. Myers Prize and SIAM’s DiPrima Award. His work is supported by NSF grants, including funding for computational tools in biomolecular electrostatics.
He teaches applied mathematics courses, including Applied Honors Calculus and Numerical Methods for Differential Equations. His lab focuses on interdisciplinary applications, bridging fluid dynamics, plasma physics, and computational biology.
