Dr. Robert Knobel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy at Queen's University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Centre for Nanophotonics. His research focuses on experimental studies of nanoscale electronic and mechanical systems at very low temperatures to explore quantum mechanics in human-made structures.
He holds a PhD from Pennsylvania State University (2000) and an M.Sc. from the University of British Columbia (1995). Prior to joining Queen's in 2003, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara, working on nanomechanical systems and single-electron transistors under A. Cleland.
His work investigates the quantum limits of measurement in nanodevices, with implications for quantum-classical transition studies and sensor technology. He is a recipient of the Dean Nathan F. Dupuis Leadership in Engineering Education Award, highlighting his contributions to academic leadership.
Dr. Knobel's affiliations include the Centre for Nanophotonics and PSU Physics Alumni membership. He is based at Stirling 308H and can be reached at knobel@queensu.ca or 613-533-2672.
