Robert Jonsson is a Lecturer in Business Administration at the Center for Municipal Strategic Studies (CKS), part of the Department of Culture and Society at Linköping University's Faculty of Arts. His academic expertise focuses on public administration, municipal governance, and strategic asset management within municipal contexts.
Dr. Jonsson earned his Master of Business Administration in 1998, Licentiate in Business Administration in 2002, and PhD in Business Administration in 2013, all from Linköping University.
His research centers on the organization, governance, and management of public operations, with particular emphasis on strategic asset management in municipalities. He investigates how municipalities can effectively manage infrastructure investments, balance sustainability considerations across environmental, social, and economic dimensions, and develop resilient community-building strategies amid changing demographics. His work has significant practical implications for municipal water and sanitation operations, examining how different organizational forms impact sustainability outcomes.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on municipal sustainability challenges, particularly in water management and infrastructure maintenance. The research consistently addresses the tension between short-term operational needs and long-term strategic planning, with increasing attention to EU sustainability reporting requirements and their implications for municipal governance structures.
Dr. Jonsson actively participates in the Mistra InfraMaint research program, which has received substantial funding (49 million SEK initially, with an additional 54 million SEK for phase 2) from the Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research. He serves on the program's management team as Linköping University's representative.
In addition to research, Jonsson participates in the network for municipal managers in the Östergötland region and contributes to the 'Leadership in Municipalities' education program. He teaches organization theory for the public sector and economics courses at Linköping University.
