Robert Johnston is a Professor of Economics and Director of the George Perkins Marsh Institute at Clark University since 2008. He holds a B.A. from Williams College (1990) and a Ph.D. in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics from the University of Rhode Island (1996). His research focuses on economic valuation of ecosystem services, benefit transfer methodologies, coastal vulnerability, and human-environment interactions, with an emphasis on aquatic and coastal systems.
He serves as Editor of Resource and Energy Economics and chairs Clark University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Johnston collaborates with international organizations, government agencies, and NGOs to apply economic insights to environmental decisions. He is on the Steering Committee of the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program and the Senior Advisory Board of the Connecticut Sea Grant Program. Past roles include membership on the US EPA Science Advisory Board and NOAA’s Scientific Advisory Board.
His work spans over 115 journal articles, advancing topics like marine plastic economics, coastal adaptation, and household decision-making impacts on the environment. Key themes include spatial modeling of fertilizer use, valuation of water quality improvements, and the integration of behavioral science into environmental policy.
Johnston’s grants and advisory roles reflect his commitment to applied environmental economics, bridging academic research with real-world policy challenges. His lab, the George Perkins Marsh Institute, emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability science.
