Robert Holyhead is a Senior Lecturer at the Cambridge School of Art, part of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, and contributes to academic staff at Manchester School of Art on BA (Hons) Fine Art (Painting).
His educational background includes studies at Manchester School of Art (1993-1996) and an MA in Painting from Chelsea School of Art (1997).
Robert Holyhead's artistic research centers on abstract painting, creating oil-on-canvas works informed by watercolor studies through a "gather and clear" methodology—bringing elements into view then reducing and refining surfaces. This process generates autonomous centers that resist traditional compositional outcomes while maintaining precarious activity and surface conviction. His core interests include fine art, painting, abstract art, and contemporary art.
Notable achievements include the ACME Fire Station live/work residency (2005) and Fundaziun NAIRS artists' residency (2007), alongside publishing his first book in 2008 featuring David Ryan's essay 'The Beginning Answer...'.
His exhibition history includes "Contested Ground" at 176, London; group shows at Galerie Van Kranendonk (Netherlands); "Robert Holyhead: Components of a practice" at Gibraltar Walk Studio (London); "Painting Unlimited" at APT, London; "Curraint D'ajer" at Fundaziun NAIRS, Scuol (Switzerland); and "Robert Holyhead: New Paintings" at Kontainer, Los Angeles (USA).
