Dr. Robert Holland is a Lecturer in Natural Sciences at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on the energy sector's implications for natural capital, particularly examining how global energy policies impact biodiversity and water resources through spatially explicit consumption-based accounting. He has published in leading journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Nature, challenging the narrow focus of decarbonization efforts without broader environmental considerations.
His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, including participatory social network analysis and meta-analyses, to address governance gaps in water quality management and renewable energy planning. He leads projects funded by the EPSRC, such as the GlobalFEEDS initiative exploring land-use implications of decarbonized energy systems. Holland currently supervises four PhD students across disciplines like Biological Sciences and Geography.
Key research themes include renewable energy pathways, bioenergy sustainability, and the financial/environmental trade-offs of exclusion zones. He collaborates with stakeholders to produce policy briefings and opinion papers advocating for holistic environmental considerations in net-zero strategies.
