Robert Greeley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arabic at Middlebury College. He holds a BA in Arabic from the University of Utah, an MA in Arabic Literature from UC Berkeley's Department of Near Eastern Studies, and a PhD in Geography from the University of South Carolina. His research focuses on conservation geography, examining intersections of protected areas, environmental governance, and food security through hands-on fieldwork in Arabic-speaking regions. He teaches Arabic language courses at all levels and interdisciplinary courses on Middle Eastern environmental issues.

Research Interests: Greeley bridges language proficiency and cultural literacy to produce social science research in conservation geography. He investigates how environmental actors negotiate material and social environments through analyses of hunting practices, food systems, and protected area policies in the Middle East. Recent work examines Lebanon's food insecurity, Syria's Ghuta Forest, and Iraq's marshlands.
Advising & Teaching: Supervises senior theses in Middle East Studies, Global Security, and Arabic Studies. Teaches courses like 'Food Security in Lebanon' and 'Environmental Middle East: Forests, Rivers, and Peoples,' integrating Arabic language instruction with environmental humanities.
