Robert Goree is an Associate Professor of Japanese in the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures at Wellesley College, specializing in Japanese language, literature, and culture from pre-modern to contemporary periods with expertise in Edo-period studies and cultural geography.
His academic credentials include:
- B.A. from Westmont College
- M.A. in English Literature from Columbia University
- M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D. in Japanese Literature from Yale University
Goree's research centers on Japanese literary and cultural history, particularly Edo-period (1603-1867) book history, travel literature, visual culture, and environmental humanities. He examines how illustrated landmark guides facilitated virtual travel, the cultural significance of spatial representations, and intersections between contemplative practices and environmental thought in Japanese traditions.
His publications reveal consistent thematic focus on cultural geography and material history, notably through analyses of Meisho Zue (illustrated landmark books) and travel practices. The 2020 monograph 'Printing Landmarks' and encyclopedia article 'The Culture of Travel in Edo-Period Japan' demonstrate methodological approaches blending literary analysis with cartographic and visual studies.
Scientific recognition includes:
- DeLong Book History Book Prize commendation (2020)
Research funding encompasses a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Research Fellowship (2007-8), American Council of Learned Societies New Faculty Fellowship (2011-13), and Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Grant (2017). As faculty, he advises undergraduate students in Japanese studies and related interdisciplinary fields at Wellesley College.
