Robert D. Sweazey

Dr. Robert D. Sweazey serves as Associate Professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology and Assistant Director at the Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne (IUSM-FW). He directs multiple academic programs including the statewide Neuroscience and Behavior course and the Renal and Respiratory course site at Fort Wayne.

Dr. Sweazey earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Wyoming, where he researched central neural processing in the gustatory system. He completed a post-doctoral position at the University of Michigan studying neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of brainstem pathways underlying protective reflexes of the upper airway. His research interests encompass neuroscience, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, brainstem pathways, upper airway reflexes, and epilepsy treatment using the Neuropace implantable device.

Dr. Sweazey's recent publications demonstrate expertise in neuroinflammation, sensory physiology, motor systems, and integrative functions of the central nervous system, with significant contributions to understanding postischemic brain injury and neuroprotective therapies. His work spans both basic neuroscience research and clinical applications.

His scientific achievements include receiving an NIH First Independent Research Support and Transition Award and R01 funding to study upper reflex pathways.

As Assistant Director of IUSM-FW since 2008, Dr. Sweazey serves on the Indiana University Fort Wayne Executive Committee and co-directs the IUSM-FW Brain Bank. He has been instrumental in developing the Scholarly Concentration in Health Integration and Healthy Aging and has served as an intraoperative neurophysiologist for deep brain stimulation treatment of Parkinson's disease and essential tremor.
