Robert Clift is an Associate Professor in the Department of Film & Media Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a documentary filmmaker and media scholar whose work has appeared on national public television, at international film festivals, and in academic publications. His films include Making Montgomery Clift (2018), Stealing Home: The Case of Contemporary Cuban Baseball (2001), and Blacking Up: Hip-Hop’s Remix of Race and Identity (2010).
Clift’s research focuses on documentary film, media studies, queer studies, cultural identity, and authenticity in documentary practice. His written work, including a chapter on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat, examines ethical dimensions in film theory, practice, and spectatorship. His films explore biographical ethics, cultural representation, and geopolitical narratives through archival materials, interviews, and ethnographic research.
