Robert Chiles

Robert Chiles is a Senior Lecturer in the History department at the University of Maryland. He is also co-editor of the journal New York History since 2019. His research and teaching explore 19th and 20th century U.S. history, focusing on political dynamics, cultural studies, environmental conservation, labor movements, urbanization, and ethnic identity.

Education: Earned a Bachelor of Science in Music (summa cum laude) from Towson University in 2004, and a PhD in History from the University of Maryland in 2012.

Research Interests: He examines societal transformations from the Gilded Age to World War II, with emphasis on Progressive Era policies, political mobilization, and the interplay between institutions and social change. His work often intersects with themes of class, gender, and regional history, particularly in New York and the Northern Plains.
