Robert Castillo is a Professor of Sequential Art at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Savannah, GA, since 2019. He holds an M.F.A. in Computer Art from the School of Visual Arts and a B.F.A. in Illustration from Lesley University. Prior to SCAD, he held visiting and adjunct roles at institutions including the University of Connecticut, William Paterson University, and NYU Tisch School of the Arts, focusing on illustration, animation, and storyboarding education.
His professional career includes prominent roles as a storyboard illustrator and concept artist for Lee Daniels Entertainment, notably contributing to the Oscar-nominated film Precious, which won BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Academy Awards. Castillo has also maintained a private practice since 2004 through Castillo Storyboards, New York.
Research interests center on visual storytelling techniques, narrative design, and the integration of traditional and digital art in film and animation. His creative work has been showcased in festivals globally, including MoMA screenings and CANNES Film Festival's Student Showcase. He has delivered lectures on storyboarding at institutions like the Norman Rockwell Museum and The Ghetto Film School.
Award highlights include the Chuck Jones Traveling Exhibit (2015), Parent's Choice Award (2013), and multiple film festival recognitions for his short films. Castillo has advised students on portfolios and career development across multiple institutions, emphasizing professional practices in the arts.
