Robert C. Rowland is a Professor of Rhetoric and Political Communication at the University of Kansas's Department of Communication Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and has been recognized with numerous awards for teaching, advising, and research. His work focuses on presidential rhetoric, argumentation theory, and political discourse, with over 100 published articles and four university-press books. Notable publications include The Rhetoric of Donald Trump (2021), which analyzes nationalist populism, and Shared Land/Conflicting Identity (2002), a study of Israeli-Palestinian symbol use. Rowland has also presented keynote addresses on Reagan's rhetorical legacy and served as editor of the Western Journal of Communication.
His research interests span the evolution of deliberative norms in political debates, the role of emotion in authoritarian rhetoric, and the intersection of mythic narratives with political identity. Recent work examines Trump's communication strategies and Obama's rhetorical revitalization of public reason. Rowland’s articles frequently address Cold War rhetoric, presidential farewell addresses, and the application of argumentation theory to contemporary public discourse.
