Robert C. Froemke is a Professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, holding dual appointments in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Department of Neuroscience. He is also the Skirball Foundation Professor of Genetics. His research focuses on synaptic plasticity, auditory perception, maternal behavior, and the role of oxytocin in social behavior. Froemke earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed postdoctoral training at UCSF under Dr. Arthur N. Schreiner.
His lab investigates three key areas: oxytocin's effects on maternal physiology, the balance of cortical excitation-inhibition, and the neural mechanisms of cochlear implants. Techniques used include in vivo electrophysiology, two-photon microscopy, and whole-brain circuit mapping. Recent work explores how neuromodulators like noradrenaline and oxytocin enhance perceptual learning and cochlear implant performance.
Notable contributions include identifying neural circuits underlying maternal care and demonstrating the therapeutic potential of oxytocin in Alzheimer's models. Froemke collaborates widely, including with Moses V. Chao and Dayu Lin, and mentors a diverse team of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
