Robert Buckingham is a Professor at the University of Cincinnati, where he has held academic positions since 2009, progressing from Assistant Professor (2009–2014) to Associate Professor (2014–2020) and finally Professor (2020–present). Prior to this, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques, Université de Montréal (2008–2009) and a Postdoctoral Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2005–2008).
He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Duke University (2005), an M.A. in Mathematics from Duke (2001), and dual S.B. degrees in Mathematics and Physics from MIT (2000).
His research focuses on asymptotic behavior and universality in stochastic systems, with emphasis on:
- Nonlinear wave equations (e.g., sine-Gordon, Schrödinger)
- Random matrix theory and spectral statistics
- Soliton dynamics and integrable systems
- Painlevé transcendents and special functions
Publications (2008–2019) demonstrate consistent focus on:
- Asymptotic analysis of solitons, Painlevé equations, and Tracy-Widom distributions
- Semiclassical limits in wave propagation
- Critical phenomena in stochastic processes
- Innovations in nonlinear PDEs and random matrix universality
Major grants include:
- NSF Frontiers in Dispersive Wave Equations (2021–2024, PI)
- NSF New Directions in Asymptotics of Nonlinear Waves (2016–2019, PI)
- Simons Foundation Universality Award (2012–2013, PI)
- Multiple NSF conference grants for probability symposia
