Robert Babcock is the Alumni Distinguished Professor of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds a BA from Louisiana State University (1978), MA (1981) and PhD (1983) from Duke University, with additional training at the Institut für Mittellatein in Berlin. His research focuses on Latin manuscripts, Medieval Latin literature, and the transmission of classical learning. He has curated collections at Yale’s Beinecke Library and authored major works on medieval manuscripts and textual transmission.
Research interests include paleography, medieval Latin pedagogy, and the cultural history of classical texts. He co-edited the Oxford Handbook of Latin Palaeography and leads collaborative projects like the study of 11th-century libraries at Gembloux. His awards include fellowship from the Belgian Royal Academy and Comité International de Paléographie Latine membership.
Teaching specialties include Medieval Latin, paleography, and Latin literature of late antiquity. He advises doctoral students in Classics and interdisciplinary fields like History and Comparative Literature. His editorial roles include the Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library series and Monumenta Germaniae Historica advisory board.
