Robert Armstrong is a Principal Research Fellow at the School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews. His research focuses on synthesizing and characterizing novel electrode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, emphasizing the correlation between material structure and electrochemical properties using powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. He pioneered neutron diffraction studies to analyze battery material structural changes during charge/discharge cycles. Armstrong leads the Faraday Institution's NEXGENNA project, advancing sodium-ion battery technology.
His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing sustainable energy and climate action. Key research areas include sodium-ion battery materials, transition metal oxides, and reticular materials. Armstrong has supervised six postgraduate students and contributed to 112 research outputs, including datasets on battery materials and co-led projects funded by the Faraday Institution and Leverhulme Trust.
Armstrong’s projects include developing high-capacity lithium-ion anodes (2014-2015) and metal-organic frameworks for high-performance batteries (2017-2019). His lab collaborates globally, focusing on sustainable energy storage solutions.
