Robert Althoff is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont, affiliated with Pediatrics, Psychology, and Neuroscience programs. His work focuses on identifying genetic and neurobiological markers for childhood psychiatric disorders, particularly those involving self-regulation deficits. He employs structural equation modeling, latent class analysis, and neuroimaging techniques in large-scale twin/family studies.
Education highlights include an Edmund J. James Scholarship (1987-1991) and Phi Beta Kappa distinction. His research has been recognized through awards like the Klingenstein Fellowship (2007), UVM Junior Researcher of the Year (2011), and multiple teaching awards from psychiatry residents.
Research trends emphasize emotional dysregulation's role in psychopathology, with recent work exploring: 1) neuroimaging correlates of irritability, 2) cross-cultural psychopathology classification, and 3) gene-environment interactions in maltreated children. Over 50 publications span developmental psychopathology, psychiatric genetics, and treatment innovations like the Vermont Family-Based Approach.
Notable achievements include leadership in the AACAP Presidential Taskforce on Emotional Dysregulation and developing mindfulness-based family interventions. He's contributed to antiracism initiatives in academic psychiatry and peer review reforms promoting open science practices.
