Dr Robert A Gibb is a Senior Lecturer in Sociological & Cultural Studies at the University of Glasgow. He joined in 2004 after roles at the University of Central Lancashire and as a Leach/Royal Anthropological Institute Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He holds an MA (Hons) in Social Anthropology and Sociology and a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on language and translation, refugee status determination, and contemporary social theory.

Research Interests:
- Language and translation in ethnographic contexts
- State bureaucracies and social movements
- Refugee status determination procedures
- Learning processes (language, music, skill)
- Contemporary social theory, particularly theories of power and absurdity
Grants:
- Lead researcher on AHRC-funded projects including 'Researching Multilingually at the Borders of Language' (2014-2017) and 'The Conversion of Asylum Applicants' Narratives' (2007-2009)
- British Academy grants on racism and welfare-state institutions
Advising & Grants:
- Supervised 10 PhD students on topics ranging from asylum processes to Roma communities in Scotland
- Contributed to ESRC and ASRF-funded initiatives
Labs/Teams: Member of the Social Anthropology & Migration research group at Glasgow. Collaborates with interdisciplinary projects on language, law, and migration.
