Robbie Watt is a Lecturer in Politics at the University of Manchester. He specializes in the politics of climate change, focusing on carbon markets, globalization, and neoliberal climate governance. He contributes to the Global Political Economy research cluster and the Environmental Politics Group. His work addresses tensions in carbon offsetting and explores links between carbon trading and crypto-currency initiatives.
Watt holds an Honours degree in Politics and Philosophy from the University of Glasgow (2010), an MSc in Climate Change and Development from the University of Sussex (2011), and a PhD in Global Development from the University of Manchester (2016). His doctoral research on carbon markets' cultural political economy involved fieldwork in Europe and India.
His research interests include critical theory applications, psychoanalytic approaches to political study, and the intersections of climate policy with economic systems. He has published on carbon markets' decline, central bank climate governance, and the ideological underpinnings of carbon offsetting. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals focused on climate action and global inequalities.
