Robbert van Amstel is a Research Associate at the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in functional anatomy and biomechanics of fasciae. He combines academic research with clinical practice as a physiotherapist in Etten-Leur, focusing on musculoskeletal manual therapy. His educational background includes two Master’s degrees from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Manual Therapy and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Sciences.
- Current PhD candidate investigating fascial tissue manipulation mechanisms in low back pain
- Teaches motor system anatomy with emphasis on fascia-muscle-bone interactions
- Conducts biomechanics research using ultrasound, motion capture, and EMG in FGB Physiolab
His research bridges clinical physiotherapy with scientific validation of manual techniques, focusing on fascia's role in movement and pain relief. Recent work includes developing the ArthroMyoFascial Complex framework and validating inertial measurement units for lumbopelvic-hip range of motion.
Current projects involve high-end ultrasound assessment of fascial deformation and comparative clinical trials of the 4xT Method® against exercise therapy. Collaborations span musculoskeletal health and rehabilitation development, with affiliations to the Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS) institute.
